Marie and Pierre Curie: partners in love and science

Unable to continue her studies in Poland because universities did not admit women, Maria Sklodowska Curie traveled to Paris in 1891 to attend the Sorbonne.
Known by the French “Marie,” she spent every spare hour reading in the library or in the laboratory. The industrious student caught the eye of Pierre Curie, director one of the laboratories where Marie worked. Curie ardently wooed Marie and made several marriage proposals.
They were finally married in 1895 and began their famous partnership. In 1898 they discovered polonium and radium.
The Curies and scientist Henri Becquerel won a Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 for discovering radioactivity. When Curie died in 1904, Marie pledged to carry on their work. She took his place at the Sorbonne, becoming the school’s first female teacher.
In 1911 she became the first person to win a second Nobel Prize, this time for chemistry. She continued to experiment and lecture until her death of leukaemia in 1934, driven by the memory of the man she loved.

Secrets of seductive make-up

Choosing eye shadows

It is enough to apply shades on eyelids to give mysteriousness and tenderness to a sight. Application of various techniques of make-up drawing allows women looking in a new fashion every day. Fine game of paints will present special sensuality and brightness to eyes.
Eye shadow was used in cosmetics for a long time. At excavation in Egypt the first paint for eyelids from antimony and soot has been found out.
Romans used antimony as eye shadow already in the middle of the first century AD.
Now the choice of various eye shadow is very wide: dry or liquid eye shadow, shades in the form of gel or cream, pencils. Their structure is similar to powder structure. The difference is only in colour - shades are painted by oxides with use of talc as a link.
Proof shades last the whole day long, they moisten gentle skin of eyelids. And soft humidifying components and soft structure allows applying shades easily and in regular intervals, and you do not need to impose two layers - one will be quite enough.
The basic substances as a part of dry shades are talc, kaolin, mica, zinc oxide, mineral oils, wax, astringents, preservatives, lanolin, colour pigments. In structure of fat shades, except painting substance, they add cezerin and paraffin, in liquid - spirit, glycerine, water. Shades in the form of a pencil are made under the same formula, as lipstick, but with big maintenance of hardeners of a heat of fusion.
High-quality shades incorporate not metal, but synthetic pigments which are enveloped by a thin film of fat and do not adjoin directly to skin.
High-quality shades should lay down exactly on a skin of eyelids, not cause irritation, not lose initial colour, last long, not accumulate in folds.
If you want shades lay down ideally - use not a standard foamed rubber applicator, but use a set of brushes from a natural bristle.
Choose your sort of shades. The most popular and practical - dry, they are stored long and applied easily. Liquid shades demand ideal drawing.

Simple rules:

Shades lay down on a skin better, if you grease it with moisterising cream and powder slightly by a thin layer of transparent friable powder preliminary.
Applying shades on an upper eyelid:
keep eyes opened, and slightly incline a head back - so you will see created drawing, and shades will lay down smoother.
If you mix in a make-up of a shade of different colours, shade border between them with a pure brush.
To clean surplus of shades or to muffle colour, “blot” a make-up with a slightly powdered wadded disk.
Eye shadow needs to be applied in a smooth layer, starting with a subtle shade, gradually increasing its intensity.

Correction of lacks by means of shades

If you have close-set eyes - place colour emphasis on external corners of eyes, and put a few light or white shades on internal.
If you have deep-set eyes - make up an upper eyelid with light shades with nacreous parts, having penciled a thin dark line over the top eyelashes.
If you wish to increase eyes visually - use light shining shades, and forget about mat dark shades and accurate eye contour. Shades shade only in a direction upwards, differently the sight will look heavy.
If you find it difficult to define, what colour of a shade suits you more, choose matching colour of your eyes. Many women look good with shades of a contrast colour creating an unusual combination to eye colour.
Put shades of lighter shade in the field of internal eye corners and on a mobile eyelid , and in a place, where eyelid “has hung”, apply darker colour. So, for example, dark blue eyes should be better underlined with a warm brown or copper shade, this way eye colour will be more intensive.
If you have prominent eyes, use dark shades. Put a planimetric line with a dark pencil or shades by means of a brush on a lower eyelid. Cover upper eyelid with shades-bases of a neutral shade, and then put a few dark shades on it using a brush. To narrow widely put eyes visually, use two kinds of shades - dark and light. Paint internal corners of eyes with dark shades, and starting from the middle of eyelids - light.

Going to buy a car?

Eight smart moves for car shoppers These strategies can help steer you toward a vehicle and financing that will fit you - and away from possible trouble.

If you plan to purchase a new or use dvehicle, there’re somethings you should do before you make that major purchase.

Here are eight strategies that can help you save money and make the process easier:
Consider buying a used vehicle

The inescapable truth is that any new vehicle loses at least 30% or more of its value the minute you drive it off the lot. Though that loss has less impact if you keep a new vehicle for at least five years, it still should enter your calculations.

A vehicle that’s 2 or 3 years old and with low mileage might be a better deal for you.
Weigh fuel costs

Although there’s no crystal ball to predict where gas prices are going, there’s little doubt that prices aren’t going to return to $2 a gallon. So look at vehicles with higher fuel ratings and give some consideration to hybrids, even though some hybrids cost considerably more than comparable gas-only vehicles.
Beware of low-cost lease deals

As manufacturers become more desperate to sell cars - 2008 looks to be another down year overall, with sales of fewer than 17 million new cars and trucks - you’ll see a lot of offers involving cut-rate lease payments.

Though these appear attractive, they can trap you if you drive more than the allotted mileage. Many of these leases allow only 10,000 miles a year and charge as much as 25 cents a mile for every mile over the allotment.

Be honest with yourself about how many miles you drive - it’s likely more than most leases allow.
Get your financial house in order

The last thing most people do is check their creditworthiness before going car shopping.

Also, check your credit reports for erroneous information, and look for ways to raise your credit scores, such as by paying off credit cards.

Remember, though, that closing credit card accounts after paying them off can actually lower your scores.
Shop for the best loan deal before buying

One way to avoid getting burned on your next car purchase is to have your financing in place before you set foot on a dealer’s lot.

A good resource should be your credit union, which typically has the lowest rates. Another place to shop is the Internet, where lenders offer essentially preapproved loan checks that you can take directly to the dealer.
Build up your down payment

Too many people these days buy cars with little or no money down and then are surprised that for the first three or four years of ownership they owe more than their cars are worth.

A good rule of thumb is to put at least 20% down on any vehicle, in cash or trade.
Clean up your trade-in

Look at the vehicle you own as if you were a shopper. Is it clean? Does the paint shine?

Are there dings that could be cheaply fixed? The difference between a car that looks well cared for and one that looks a little shabby can be thousands of dollars.

Also, if you still owe money on your trade-in, make sure you can get enough to pay off the loan. Don’t roll the balance into the loan on your new car.

What makes an addict?

Why some people become addicts where others don’t.

Once a young marine-engineer, a non-smoker, ambitiously said he would one day smoke cigars because a cigar would look very stylish on him.Auntie Rejoice, a middle-aged friend from the U.S. said “I don’t want to get addicted to anything except God’s love.”
I personally do not want to get addicted to anything - not even to coffee. If I want to enjoy the flavour of coffee at all, I usually take a cup of it, if I have not had one the previous day. And that is to keep myself from getting addicted. So, we each seem to have our own idea of addiction, drug abuse and everything.
But, what might make a marine engineer, for example, more likely than a middle-aged American to use - or abuse - alcohol, cigar or a drug?

Predisposition

Many genetic, social and psychological factors have been found to predispose a person to addiction.Recent genetic studies have only supported the idea that some people are genetically predisposed to get addicted to substances. According to one study, for example, sons of male alcoholics show more sensitivity to reinforcing aspects of alcohol. We deduce from another study that the genetic influence on persistent smoking is different from the genetic influence on initiating smoking. And according to a similar study, the magnitude of genetic influence on lifetime smoking appears to be consistent across different countries.
Many social factors play a key role in young people’s smoking, taking alcohol or drugs. Factors that influence illicit drug use include drug availability, significant others’ labelling of the person as deviant, peer influence, early childhood deviance, poor school adjustment and weak family influence.
If a person in his/her early teenage lacks family control, closeness of mother and communication with parents, there is a high likelihood that the person will drink, smoke or take drugs. A number of such factors, in fact, are also said to make a person more likely to sell drugs. Many substance abusers exhibit a history of antisocial behaviour and a high level of depression or low self-esteem.Religion also plays an important role in keeping a person from using or abusing alcohol.
People in all religious denominations use lesser alcohol than non-religious people do, with those in denominations traditionally opposed to alcohol using it less. Of those who drink, religious people abuse alcohol less than do non-religious people do.

Exposure

One major factor underlying abuse of both licit and illicit substances is exposure to licit substances. In other words, people tend to start off with acceptable substances - like alcohol and tobacco - and later fall prey to more evil substances. In North American culture, for example, it is rare for a person to start using hard liquor, marijuana, or other illicit substances without first using tobacco or beer. It is also believed, indeed, that drug involvement in taking drugs in North American and similar cultures in the recent decades has followed a predictable pattern.
Also, once drug taking has begun, a number of physiological and reinforcing factors enter the equation. Reinforcing effects of a drug, which shortly follow drug taking, set off a psychological phenomenon called “operant conditioning”, which leads to drug seeking and further drug taking. Later, the person’s negative mood state or the environmental context in which he/she takes drugs can come to serve as environmental cues, which will further increase the desire to engage in drug-taking behaviour.
